Köthen Castle, Castle and museum in Köthen, Germany
Köthen Castle is a fortified residence in the town of Köthen featuring outer and inner areas connected by three bridges spanning a moat. The structures display Renaissance architecture with later Baroque additions, and the grounds now house a Bach memorial center, city archives, a music school, and a museum of prehistoric objects.
Construction began in the mid-1100s, and for centuries it served as home to the Princes and Dukes of Anhalt. Over time, Renaissance and Baroque improvements were added to the original medieval structures until its royal occupation ceased in the mid-1800s.
Johann Sebastian Bach created many of his instrumental works while working here as court music director in the early 1700s. The castle remains deeply connected to classical music history, drawing visitors interested in following the composer's creative journey.
The site has multiple entry points and visiting is straightforward since all institutions are located within the same compound. Daytime visits work best when museums and centers are open, allowing you to explore both interior exhibits and the outdoor bridge systems and landscaping.
Within the castle grounds is the Naumann Museum displaying around 1300 bird specimens collected by naturalist Johann Friedrich Naumann. This extensive ornithological collection is often overlooked but reveals the scientific interests that extended beyond the musical attractions.
