Postamt Köthen, Historical post office building in Köthen, Germany.
Postamt Köthen is a two-story brick building at Lindenstrasse 12/13 with high curved gables and detailed stone elements in German Renaissance style. The eastern section was added later, giving the facade different construction phases.
The building was constructed between 1883 and 1884 under government architect Hausmann and shaped the city's late 19th-century landscape. An eastern expansion occurred during 1903 and 1904.
The post office and adjacent residential house from the Gründerzeit period together shape the look of Neustädter Platz. These buildings form a visual anchor for the neighborhood and display the architectural styles of their different eras.
The western section was transformed into Haus am Schlosspark in 2020, now offering assisted living services. The historic structure remains visible from outside and can be explored while walking around the plaza.
An original stable structure in the courtyard still survives today, once serving as a carriage house during postal operations. This hidden feature reveals the practical needs of historical mail service.
