St. Agnus

St. Agnus is a Lutheran church in Köthen with baroque architecture featuring a rectangular choir and a square stair tower with curved cap at its northeast corner. A bell turret crowns the western gable, defining the building's profile.

Construction took place between 1694 and 1699 as the first Lutheran church in what was then a predominantly Reformed city. This building marked a turning point in local religious life.

The name honors the princess who commissioned its construction, and her legacy remains connected to the congregation. Visitors can see religious artworks inside that reflect ties to reformist artists and devotional traditions.

Johann Sebastian Bach attended services here during his years as court music director and left his personal mark on the place. The communion chalice he used remains in the church today.
