Schloss Montfort, Moorish château in Langenargen, Germany
Schloss Montfort is a castle with yellow and red brick walls standing on a peninsula extending into Lake Constance, decorated with elaborate terracotta patterns. A medieval-style observation tower dominates the structure and provides views of the lake and surrounding landscape.
The castle was built in 1866 under King Karl I of Württemberg, replacing older fortifications including Roman watchtowers and a 14th-century fortress. This new structure marked the transition from military to civilian use of the site.
The castle displays artworks spanning several centuries from Dr. Günther Grzimek's collection, featuring religious and mythological subjects. Visitors encounter these pieces while exploring the interior and gain insight into European art traditions.
The tower is accessible daily from April to November, allowing visitors to enjoy wide views of the lake from the top. The climb involves several stairs, so visitors should wear comfortable shoes and be aware that access may be limited during bad weather.
Since 2016, a Steinway & Sons grand piano has been housed in the concert hall and is regularly used for performances during the Langenargener Castle Concerts. This instrument contributes to a special acoustic experience that combines classical music with a historic setting.
