Hängebrücke über die Argen, Steel suspension footbridge in Langenargen, Germany

The Argen suspension bridge is a steel structure connecting Kressbronn and Langenargen across the river without support pillars in the water. It spans approximately 72 meters and was built using steel cables and metal girders that support the entire weight without central supports.

The structure was built between 1896 and 1897 under King Wilhelm II of Württemberg and ranks among the oldest cable suspension bridges in the country. This engineering work became a benchmark for German bridge-building techniques of that era.

A model of this engineering achievement was displayed at the 1900 Paris World Exhibition to demonstrate German progress in bridge construction technology.

The structure now serves only pedestrians and cyclists, while vehicle traffic uses a separate concrete bridge since 1978. Visitors should expect a narrow walkway that requires care, particularly when meeting other pedestrians or cyclists.

During World War II, local residents saved the bridge from destruction by stopping soldiers who attempted to demolish it during air raids. This brave action preserved the historical structure for future generations.
