Sparkasse am Fischmarkt, Financial administrative building in Fischmarkt, Erfurt, Germany
Sparkasse am Fischmarkt is a financial administrative building with modern architecture featuring limestone plates and artificial stone on the lower floors plus projecting upper levels. The building houses a branch bank with consultation areas and digital services.
The building was constructed between 1934 and 1935 following Johannes Klass's design by architects Gustav Schweizer and Karl Heinrich Müller. It replaced the former district court that previously stood on this site.
The facade displays sculptures by Hans Walther and frescoes by Luise Klempt showing gardening, crafts, and industry. These artistic elements still shape how the square looks and feels today.
The building sits directly on Fischmarkt, Erfurt's main square, and is easy to reach on foot. The branch operates on weekdays with extended hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays until 18:00.
In 1936, the basement contained a memorial hall dedicated to 3,579 Erfurt citizens who died during World War I. This space reflects how the building was connected to the city's historical events.
