Schwalbe-Arena, Multifunktionshalle in Gummersbach
The Schwalbe-Arena is a large multipurpose hall in the center of Gummersbach that opened in 2013 and can accommodate up to 4,100 visitors. The modern building of concrete and glass features a flexible layout with a wooden floor and can be divided into up to four sections to accommodate different events.
The arena was built on the site of the former Steinmüller factory and opened in August 2013, giving Gummersbach a modern sports center. Its construction was part of a citywide renewal of the historic industrial area, with the neighboring Halle 32 preserved as a protected monument.
The arena is named after Schwalbe, a tire manufacturer and its main sponsor. It serves as the center of sports life in Gummersbach and hosts regular local celebrations and community gatherings where residents come together for shared activities.
The hall is easy to reach by car and has ample parking nearby; on event days the area becomes busy with visitors. The building has wide entrances, well-marked pathways to seating areas, and is fully accessible with dedicated parking for people with disabilities.
The hall is home to the handball team VfL Gummersbach, which plays in the German Bundesliga and has a long tradition in the city. A plaza beside the arena is named after legendary coach Heiner Brand and honors the region's sports history.
