Sohlener Berge, Hill chain in southern Magdeburg, Germany
The Sohlener Berge is a hill chain system south of Magdeburg with extensive walking and natural areas. The terrain offers varying elevations and open as well as forested sections that spread across several square kilometers.
The terrain served as a military position during World War II and played a role in combat operations in 1945. After the war, the area developed into a recreation and nature area for the Magdeburg region.
The hills are maintained today through sheep grazing, which keeps the landscape open and preserves traditional land use. Visitors can observe these herds at work and experience how the terrain functions as living pastureland.
The area is easily accessible and suitable for walks of varying difficulty, with paths for both leisurely and more active visitors. There is ample space for orientation and multiple entry and exit points around the hill chain.
The hill chain formed tens of thousands of years ago through glacial deposits during an ice age and bears traces of these ancient geological processes. Such formations are uncommon in the region and show how natural forces permanently shaped the landscape.
