The area served as a military training ground until 1991, before its designation as a nature reserve in December 2000.
The Schönower Heide Association, established in 2006, organizes guided tours and educational programs focusing on environmental education for children.
Two circular hiking trails of 1.5 and 5 kilometers traverse the reserve, with information panels explaining local flora, fauna, and grazing projects.
Red deer, fallow deer, and mouflon sheep maintain 140 hectares of heath through natural grazing, supporting biodiversity preservation efforts.
