St. Nikolaikirche

St. Nikolaikirche is a Gothic church in Lübeck featuring distinctive red brick, pointed arches, and tall windows characteristic of northern German religious architecture. Inside, slender columns support a high vault decorated with carved and painted ornaments throughout the interior.

Construction began in 1230, making it one of the oldest religious structures in Lübeck's medieval trade center, with its interior repeatedly refurnished across the centuries. Following damage during the 20th century, the building was restored and today shows the city's commitment to preserving its heritage.

The church displays northern German craftsmanship through its painted altars, carved choir stalls, and ornate epitaphs on the walls. These artworks reflect the piety and prosperity of Lübeck merchants who preserved these treasures across centuries.

The main entrance is located at Nikolaikirchplatz, and the interior can be viewed during opening hours. The church sits centrally and is easily reached on foot from other Lübeck sites.
