Fernmeldeturm Stockelsdorf, Communication tower in Stockelsdorf, Germany.
The Fernmeldeturm Stockelsdorf is a concrete communication and television tower in Schleswig-Holstein, fitted with multiple antenna platforms that transmit television, radio, and mobile signals. It stands on the Bungsberg, the highest natural point in the state.
The Deutsche Bundespost had the tower built between 1989 and 1991 to modernize the telecommunications network in northern Germany. Construction coincided with German reunification, which brought new demands for signal coverage across the region.
The tower earned the nickname 'Schliekieker' through a local naming competition, a word that connects to the landscape and character of the surrounding area. This name shows how people in the region have made the structure part of their everyday identity.
The tower is an active transmission facility and is not open to the public. It is clearly visible from the surrounding Bungsberg area, which also offers walking trails and a nearby observation point.
Although the Bungsberg stands only about 550 feet (168 meters) above sea level, the tower's signal reaches well beyond the borders of Schleswig-Holstein into neighboring states. This combination of a modest hilltop and a wide transmission range makes the site unusually effective for its size.
