Tharandt Forest, Forest research area near Tharandt, Germany.
Tharandt Forest is a woodland area that extends across several municipalities in Saxony and lies between the cities of Freiberg and Dresden. The forest is crossed by many paths used for hiking, cycling, and riding.
Around 1800 the forest became a model for scientific forestry after Johann Heinrich Cotta introduced systematic reforestation methods following extensive logging. These changes established a lasting tradition of forest research in the region.
The Forstbotanischer Garten within the forest displays about 3,200 different plant species and serves as a research site for the Technical University of Dresden. Visitors can see how the university collects and studies plants from around the world.
The forest paths are open for various activities, with separate routes for walkers, cyclists, and riders. There are also dedicated paths for coaches and sledges, so you should watch for such vehicles and give way if needed.
The Tännichtgrund area of the forest harbored robbers in the early 1700s, including the notorious Saxon bandit Lips Tullian. Today rocks bearing his name mark this wilder chapter of the forest's past.
