Theaterschiff Batavia, Theater ship in Wedel, Germany
The Theaterschiff Batavia is a converted vessel permanently moored along the Brooksdamm in Wedel. It provides an intimate space for theater productions, cabaret performances, and musical concerts throughout the year.
The vessel was recovered from Hamburg waters in 1952 and initially served as a rowing club facility. In 1972, it was purchased and transformed into a theater by Hannes Grabau.
The vessel serves the local community as a space where theater and music are woven into daily cultural life. Visitors notice how performances draw people together and how the ship functions as a special gathering place for artistic expression.
The ship features an onboard restaurant and a summer beer garden where visitors can relax before or after shows. The waterfront location makes it easy to reach by car or public transport to the central mooring point.
The ship has housed the Seepferdchen children's theater school since 2006, offering an unusual classroom setting where young performers train on the water. This merges maritime heritage with artistic education in a truly distinctive way.
