Talsperre Windischleuba, Water dam in Windischleuba, Thuringia, Germany.
Talsperre Windischleuba is a water dam that crosses the Pleisse River between Fockendorf and Windischleuba. The structure stretches approximately 400 meters with a height of about 6 meters and includes a fish passage system that allows aquatic life to move through the water freely.
This dam was constructed between 1951 and 1953 as an important infrastructure project. A comprehensive renovation from 2007 to 2009 modernized the discharge systems and created a wider overflow threshold.
The reservoir area serves as a bird sanctuary where many water species find food and shelter in the soft floodplain vegetation. Visitors often spot different bird species throughout the year in this protected zone.
The site is located south of Leipzig and is accessible from most points in the region. The area around the reservoir offers good opportunities for nature observation and walking.
Despite its location in Thuringia, this dam is managed by Saxon state authorities rather than Thuringian water management agencies. This administrative arrangement reflects the complex historical boundaries of the region.
