Schloss Poschwitz, Renaissance castle in Altenburg, Germany
Schloss Poschwitz is a Renaissance castle in Altenburg with four wings, classical side sections, and numerous windows distributed across its facade. The structure sits within a park of around 5000 square meters that includes a pond.
The original water castle belonged to Otto von Poschwitz from 1264 to 1274. The present Renaissance structure was built in 1580 by Friedrich von der Gabelentz.
The card game Skat was invented here in 1813 during a scholarly gathering hosted by owner Hans Carl Leopold von der Gabelentz. This game remains deeply rooted in German entertainment and social life.
The building is currently in poor condition with damaged windows, crumbling plaster, and moisture-damaged walls throughout. Visitors should expect ongoing restoration work and exercise caution when exploring.
Composer Franz Liszt performed several concerts here around 1870 while the castle was still owned by the von der Gabelentz family. These musical events were among the region's cultural highlights.
