University and State Library Bonn, University library in Bonn, Germany
The University and State Library Bonn is a research library in the center of Bonn, collecting books, journals, and digital materials across a broad range of academic fields. The main building holds the central collection, and additional branch locations are spread across the university campus and the city.
The library was founded in 1818 alongside the University of Bonn and was originally intended to serve academic needs. Over time it took on a regional role and became the state library for North Rhine-Westphalia.
The library serves both the university and the wider region of North Rhine-Westphalia, which means its reading rooms bring together students, researchers, and curious members of the public. Walking through the building, you notice how different groups share the same tables and shelves without any clear boundary between academic and general use.
The main building stays open until midnight, which makes it a useful place to work during evening hours. Staff are available on-site to help with catalog searches and finding the right section of the collection.
The library runs an ongoing project to identify books that were taken from their owners during the Nazi period, known as NS-Raubgut, and to return them to rightful heirs. This work means the library actively looks through its own shelves for objects with a troubled past.
