Burg Ulmen

The castle complex includes an upper structure positioned on a slope above the Ulmener Maar and a lower section that has completely disappeared.

First documented in 1074, the castle underwent multiple transformations, serving as a residence for crusader Heinrich von Ulmen and later housing regional nobles.

The castle stones were repurposed for town reconstruction following the 1831 fire, demonstrating the direct connection between the fortress and local architecture.

The ruins stand as a public park where visitors can examine the consolidated walls and understand medieval defensive construction techniques.

The fortress rises above an ancient volcanic crater filled with water, with its foundation built upon volcanic tuff from prehistoric eruptions.
