Hochkelberg

Hochkelberg is a mountain summit in the High Eifel region, rising to 675 meters and covered with dense beech forests on its slopes. A transmission tower stands near the peak, visible from various points around the mountain.

The mountain formed as a stratovolcano, with its basaltic core pushed to the surface over millions of years by geological processes. This volcanic past shaped the landscape that exists in the High Eifel today.

The slopes show signs of how people have inhabited and used this terrain for long periods, with archaeological findings scattered throughout the forested area. These traces reveal the rhythm of settlement and activity across the volcanic landscape over time.

The summit is accessible via the marked trail Zum Hochkelberg, with parking available at several starting points around the base of the mountain. The climb is a moderate hike suitable for walkers of varying abilities.

At the southern base lies a water-filled crater called Mosbrucher Weiher, created by volcanic explosions when the volcano was active. This crater lake offers a direct view into the dramatic volcanic events that shaped the region.
