Booser Doppelmaar, Volcanic maar formation in Boos, Germany
The Booser Doppelmaar consists of two circular basins with tuff embankments, forming large depressions that have filled with sediment over thousands of years.
Carbon-14 dating indicates the eastern maar formed 14,160 years ago, while the associated tuffs date back approximately 10,150 years with basalt bombs and olivine crystals.
The wet zones of the maars transformed from ancient fish ponds to current agricultural lands, with the Booser Weiher fish pond remaining in the west-southwestern section.
Visitors can access the site from the Vulkanpark parking lot, following a marked path that leads to both maar formations and connects to a 9-kilometer hiking trail.
Eight cinder cones surround the maars, with one producing a lava stream that flowed westward into the Nitz valley approximately 35,000 years ago.
