Booser Doppelmaar, Volcanic maar formation in Boos, Germany

The Booser Doppelmaar consists of two circular depressions with tuff ridges in Germany's Eifel volcanic region, having accumulated sediment over thousands of years to create their present form. The formations display typical volcanic bowl shapes with distinct geological layers visible along their sides.

The eastern basin formed roughly 14,000 years ago from volcanic activity, while the surrounding tuff layers date back approximately 10,000 years earlier. The cinder cones encircling the site represent an even earlier eruption event from about 35,000 years ago.

The wet zones transformed from ancient fish ponds into farmland over the centuries, with the Booser Weiher pond remaining on the southwestern side as a reminder of past uses. Locals adapted the landscape for agriculture while preserving water features that still define the area today.

The site is accessible from the Vulkanpark parking area, with marked trails leading to both formations and connecting to a 9-kilometer loop route around the region. Well-signposted paths accommodate different walking abilities and allow you to explore at your own pace.

One of the nearby cinder cones produced a lava stream roughly 35,000 years ago that flowed westward into the Nitz valley, leaving traces visible today. This flow traveled many kilometers away, demonstrating the intensity of those ancient eruptions.
