Wallbergbahn, Gondola lift in Rottach-Egern, Germany
Wallbergbahn is a gondola lift in Rottach-Egern, Bavaria, connecting the valley floor to the summit of the Wallberg mountain. The line runs through forested slopes and ends at a mountain station that opens onto open terrain with views over the Tegernsee lake below.
The cable car opened in 1951 as the first direct link between the Rottach-Egern valley and the Wallberg summit. Its arrival made the mountain accessible to a wider range of visitors and gradually shaped the outdoor tourism of the area.
At the top of the Wallberg, a small chapel stands near the mountain station and draws visitors arriving by gondola or on foot. It gives the summit a contemplative quality that contrasts with the activity of hikers and paragliders preparing their gear nearby.
The lower station is easy to find in the center of Rottach-Egern and is clearly signposted from the main road. On fine weekends, demand picks up quickly, so arriving early in the day helps avoid long waits.
The Wallberg summit is one of the few peaks in the Bavarian foothills designated as an official paragliding launch site. On clear days, pilots can be seen taking off regularly and gliding all the way back down to the valley below.
