Sanctuary Steinhausen, Baroque church in Bad Schussenried, Germany
Sanctuary Steinhausen is a Baroque church in Bad Schussenried featuring an oval floor plan, symmetrical architecture, a bell tower, dome, and large windows that provide balanced natural lighting throughout the interior.
The church was built between 1728 and 1731 under Abbot Didacus Ströbele, replacing a smaller Mary church that dated to 1275. This construction represented a major modernization of the earlier religious center.
The church displays architectural elements from the Wessobrunner School, featuring elaborate stucco decorations and ceiling paintings by the Zimmermann brothers that define the interior.
Access to the church is currently only through the cemetery entrance on Dominikus-Zimmermann Street. Visitors should check opening times before visiting, as the church may be closed at times due to restoration work.
The organ from 1975 features 25 registers spread across two manuals and a pedal, combining elements from different historical periods. This instrument blends modern craftsmanship with historical references in a distinctive way.
