Karthäuserhof, Historic winery in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.
Karthäuserhof is an estate with about 19 hectares of vineyard land near Trier dedicated mainly to growing Riesling grapes. The property spreads across rolling hills and contains historic cellars where wine is aged and produced.
The estate was founded in 1335 when the Elector of Trier granted vineyard lands to Carthusian monks. This founding moment established one of Germany's oldest wine traditions that continues to this day.
The name refers to the Carthusian monks who once worked these lands and shaped the place. Visitors can still see traces of their monastic heritage in the old barrels and structures throughout the cellars.
The estate is located in Trier and opens to visitors during the season who want to taste wines and join tours. The best time to visit is autumn when the grape harvest takes place and the property feels most active.
The winery sources all its grapes from just one vineyard location called Karthäuserhofberg, which defines its entire production. This focus on a single site makes every wine fully traceable and reveals how each year differs from the last.
