Wiesenbatterie Schillig, Protected area in Wangerland, Germany.
Wiesenbatterie Schillig is a nature reserve covering about 6.6 hectares in Wangerland. The site is defined by a forested section, which stands out as unusual among the treeless marsh landscapes typical of the Lower Saxony region.
The site was constructed as a military fortification before World War I. After World War II in 1945, it was heavily damaged by explosives and later converted into a protected nature reserve.
The name comes from an old military battery that once stood here. Today visitors walk through the reserve to observe the woodland and natural surroundings that make it different from the flat marshes around it.
The area is best explored on foot, with accessible paths through the wooded section and across the open marshland. Visitors should wear weather-appropriate clothing since the air is often damp and conditions can change quickly.
The reserve provides critical resting and nesting spots for many bird species that otherwise find little shelter in the treeless marshes of the region. The wooded areas serve as an oasis for migrating and resident birds.
