The castle stands between the Süntel and Deister ridges, featuring typical elements of Weser Renaissance architecture with surrounding water fortifications.
Construction of Hülsede Water Castle started in 1529 under Claus von Rottorp's direction and continued with extensions until approximately 1600.
The structure represents a traditional German Wasserschloss, combining defensive water features with residential functions typical of Renaissance period architecture.
The castle underwent significant restoration work starting in 1979 to maintain its structural integrity and preserve its architectural elements.
The property remained in the Mengersen family's possession for over three centuries until 1908 when it transitioned to freehold status.
