Steglitz Water Tower, Heritage water tower in Steglitz, Germany.
The Steglitz Water Tower is an industrial monument that rises as a massive brick structure with characteristic patterns above the surrounding buildings. The building has a cylindrical form and is marked by decorative brickwork that runs across its entire height.
The structure was built between 1915 and 1919 as a water supply facility for the growing Steglitz residential area. After the wars, it survived and gained additional functions over time that saved it from demolition.
The tower displays skilled brick craftsmanship from the early twentieth century and now serves different tenants, showing how Berlin's industrial structures became places for new purposes. Visitors can notice the careful execution of the brickwork and design details when walking around the site.
The site is accessible from outside, but the interior is not usually open to visitors since it is used for office and business space. The best time to view it is during the day when the building is seen in natural light.
The building was originally designed only as a water storage facility, but later also served as a crematorium and urn hall, making it an unexpected blend of different functions. These later additions remain visible in the structure itself today.
