Castell-Castell, Medieval castle complex in Castell, Germany
Castell-Castell is a castle estate in Bavaria featuring a Baroque palace built at the foot of a hill alongside an English landscape garden dating to 1820. The complex is complemented by ruins of two medieval fortresses positioned on the Herrenberg and Schlossberg hills.
The original fortress was founded by the Counts of Castell in the 11th century but was destroyed during the Peasants' War in 1525 and later reconstructed. The present Baroque palace was built subsequently as a residence for the family at this historic location.
The Protestant St. Johannes Church, built between 1784 and 1792, serves as the burial site of the princely Castell family. It shapes the character of the place and reflects the religious importance of the estate for the local community.
The estate is located near Würzburg in Lower Franconia and remains accessible year-round, with the gardens being particularly pleasant in spring and summer. Visitors should wear comfortable footwear since the terrain with its hills requires some walking.
The Fürstlich Castell'sche Bank, founded by the family, continues to operate at this location, linking financial tradition with historical heritage. This unbroken presence shows how the noble house has maintained its roots to this day.
