The Merkur Observation Tower is a 63-meter steel and concrete structure located on Merkur Mountain near Baden-Baden with multiple viewing platforms. The tower offers visitors different heights from which to observe the Black Forest region.

The tower began operating in 1950 as a transmission facility for FM radio and television serving the Baden-Baden region. Significant modernization work took place between 1980 and 1982 when an elevator was installed to access the viewing platforms.

The tower takes its name from Mount Merkur, the 669-metre hill on which it stands. Since 1950 it has transmitted FM radio for the Südwestfunk, now SWR, and from 1953 television; the aerial mast still carries directional radio antennas for internal SWR links.

A lift installed in the 1980s addition carries visitors up to the 23-metre viewing platform, so no climbing is needed. The tower stands on the 669-metre Merkur summit; the adjoining steel-concrete structure was begun in autumn 1980 and handed over in December 1982.

The tower was designed to serve both as broadcast infrastructure and public viewpoint, a dual purpose that continues today. The antenna masts on top remain operational for regional transmissions while supporting tourist visits.
