McNair Barracks

McNair Barracks is a former military installation in Lichterfelde featuring 1930s-era brick structures originally built for industrial production. The compound contains residential buildings, administrative offices, dining facilities, and open grounds arranged as a self-contained military community.

The installation was established in 1945 when American forces repurposed the former Telefunken industrial facility that had manufactured radar equipment during World War II. It functioned as a major U.S. military presence in West Berlin throughout the Cold War decades.

The site represents American life in divided Berlin, showing how military personnel and civilians shared the city during Cold War times. Buildings and open spaces reflect daily routines and community practices from decades of continuous occupation.

The grounds are partly open to visitors through guided tours of select areas. Check availability and access conditions before visiting, as not all sections of the compound can be freely explored.

The compound remained one of the last American military bases in Berlin, maintaining supply lines and community life during the blockade and wall construction. Its story shows how an isolated settlement sustained itself for generations while surrounded by geopolitical tensions.
