Disch-Haus, Office building in Altstadt-Nord, Germany.
The Disch-Haus is an office building in the New Objectivity style located in Altstadt-Nord, featuring a distinctive rounded corner at the intersection of Brückenstraße and Herzogstraße. Its facade is defined by continuous window bands and travertine strips, while the ground floor displays fully glazed shop windows.
Architects Bruno Paul and Franz Weber designed this New Objectivity style building in 1928 as a replacement for the former Hotel Disch that previously occupied the site. The construction marked an important transition from 19th century residential architecture to modern commercial design in the Cologne city center.
From 1933 to 1938, the building served as headquarters for the Jewish Cultural Association Rhine-Ruhr and housed numerous Jewish businesses and law firms. Today, these historical connections remind visitors of the building's role as an important meeting place for the Jewish community during that period.
The building is easy to locate at a busy corner in the old town district and offers good visibility from the street. Keep in mind that this is an active office building, and access to the upper floors may be restricted to workers and authorized visitors.
The building houses one of the few still-permitted Schindler paternoster elevators in Cologne, installed in 1952 and continuing to operate. This rare elevator type, with its endless moving cabins, remains a fascinating remnant of the past that still functions today.
