Alte Synagoge, Synagogue in Hospital District, Stuttgart, Germany
The structure displayed Moorish design elements, with battlements crowning its eastern facade and a Torah shrine decorated with botanical patterns in Islamic style.
The synagogue, designed by Gustav Adolf Breymann and completed by Adolf Wolff, opened its doors on May 3, 1861 at Hospitalstrasse 36.
The interior architecture drew inspiration from the Alhambra in Granada, incorporating detailed patterns and architectural elements from Moorish design principles.
The construction cost exceeded 110,000 guilders, with the majority of funding coming directly from members of the Jewish community.
After its destruction in 1938, the stone blocks from the synagogue were repurposed into garden walls and vineyard barriers throughout the Stuttgart region.
