Blauer Turm, Industrial research tower in Herten, Germany
The Blauer Turm in Herten is an architectural structure approximately 25 meters tall with a distinctive oval footprint and characteristic blue mesh covering over its steel framework. The structure was part of a research facility that processed various materials including wood residues, organic waste, animal meal, used oil, plastics, and rubber.
The facility operated from 2001 to 2006 as a pilot project with a capacity of about one megawatt for converting biomass into synthesis gas through staged reforming technology. The project marked an important moment in exploring alternative energy sources in the region.
The blue tower represented industrial innovation in the region and drew professionals interested in renewable energy technologies. Visitors could see how the industry attempted to explore new approaches to energy generation.
The site is best reached on foot or by bicycle and is located in an industrial area with good transport connections. Visitors should note that the area is accessible during regular business hours and sturdy shoes are recommended.
The gasification process separated biomass gasification from product gas generation and operated at temperatures reaching 1000 degrees Celsius without harmful emissions. This thermochemical process was an innovative solution for its time in cleanly converting waste materials.
