Schloss Schönberg, Heritage castle in Wenzenbach, Germany

Schloss Schönberg is a castle complex in Wenzenbach that sits on a hilltop and shows medieval forms with towers and stone walls. The building combines residential spaces with defensive structures and offers views of the surrounding landscape from its position.

The castle was founded in the Middle Ages as a fortress and controlled trade routes in the region. Later it evolved into a residential castle and was rebuilt several times while keeping its importance to local history.

The baroque chapel of St. Joseph survives inside the complex, and the cellars of a former outbuilding remain as two parallel barrel-vaulted rooms in rubble masonry, probably from the second half of the 16th century. The filled-in moat is now used as a garden, and the lane called Am Schloss follows the line of the old ditch as far as house number 9.

Schloss Schönberg is privately owned, so visits are not generally possible; the complex is best viewed from the public street Am Schloß, which follows the line of the former moat up to house number 9. The former moat itself is now used as a garden. The site lies in the municipality of Wenzenbach, east of Regensburg.
