Hirschacker und Dossenwald, Nature reserve in Mannheim and Schwetzingen, Germany
Hirschacker and Dossenwald is a nature reserve in Mannheim and Schwetzingen featuring wetlands, forests, and meadows alongside sandy dunes. The varied habitats support different plant and animal communities adapted to these diverse conditions.
The protected area was designated in 1993 and includes land previously used for military purposes. This earlier use shaped the landscape, particularly creating open clearings in the southern Hirschacker section.
The name Dossenwald comes from an old German word meaning pine tree, reflecting the primary tree species found throughout the reserve.
The reserve is accessible via marked walking paths that guide visitors through the area. Staying on these designated trails helps protect the habitats while offering the best opportunities for observing the landscape.
The reserve contains one of the region's most substantial sandy drift areas, home to specialized plants like cross gentian and silver sand grass. These conditions were partly maintained through earlier military use that kept the ground open and free from dense vegetation.
