Schwetzingen, Municipality district in Rhein-Neckar, Germany
Schwetzingen is a district town in Rhein-Neckar, Germany, positioned roughly midway between Heidelberg and Mannheim in the state of Baden-Württemberg. The municipality covers just over eight square miles (21 square kilometers) and sits at an elevation of about 330 feet (100 meters) above sea level.
The first written record mentioning the settlement as Suezzingen dates back to 766, while the present town grew from two separate communities. These two parts gradually came together during the 17th and 18th centuries to form the municipality as it exists today.
The Schwetzingen Palace Theater continues its tradition of musical performances, maintaining the legacy of classical compositions and theatrical productions.
The town hall on Hebelstraße 1 houses the municipal administration and welcomes visitors during regular business hours. Highway connections via the A5 and A6 provide straightforward access to surrounding cities and regions throughout the area.
The palace garden contains the first mosque built on German soil, erected in 1779 purely as an ornamental feature without religious use. This structure formed part of the exotic garden architecture and served only as decoration within the broader park landscape.
