Bispinghof

Bispinghof is a Baroque castle in Münster featuring symmetric wings, ornate stone decorations, and a prominent central section that emphasizes its design. The structure now serves the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität as an administrative building, with much of its interior dedicated to university offices.

Prince-Bishop Maximilian Friedrich von Königsegg-Rothenfels commissioned construction between 1767 and 1787 to demonstrate his ecclesiastical authority. The castle arose during an era when Münster functioned as an independent bishopric with the bishop as its ruling figure.

The building once served as a residence for prince-bishops, reflecting their dual role in governing both spiritual and temporal affairs. The structure itself demonstrates the wealth and authority they wielded in the region.

The building houses university administration and access is limited to specific areas of the structure. However, the botanical garden positioned behind the main building remains accessible and provides a public space to explore.

The castle grounds contain a botanical garden maintained by the university that displays numerous plant species in organized arrangements. This green space provides a calming contrast to the formal nature of the Baroque structure.
