Falkenberg station, Tower station and architectural heritage monument in Falkenberg/Elster, Germany
Falkenberg station is a major railway interchange with two levels and seven tracks extending in different directions. A large marshalling yard connects and organizes the movement between both levels.
The original station opened in 1871 and the main building was constructed in 1882. Heavy bombing during World War II severely damaged the main building, leading to its demolition.
The station displays different building styles from various periods of German railway history. This mixture allows visitors to see how railway architecture developed and changed over the decades.
The lower level has five platform tracks while the upper level has two outside platform tracks. Staircases connect both levels and allow passage between the different platform areas.
An old railway depot northeast of the main facility holds and preserves retired steam locomotives. These historic engines display the technology and appearance of earlier railway eras.
