Generalstabsgebäude Berlin, Military headquarters building in Berlin-Mitte, Germany
The Generalstabsgebäude is an administrative building in Neo-Renaissance style located at Königsplatz in central Berlin. The complex spreads across multiple connected wings with heavy stone facades and numerous detailed window arrangements that occupy an entire block.
The building was constructed between 1867 and 1871 as the seat of the Great General Staff of the German Empire. In the following years until 1882, the complex expanded northward to support growing military administrative functions.
The structure represented German military power through architectural design, housing strategic military planning sessions and administrative functions for the Prussian leadership.
The building is located near Berlin's modern government quarter and is easily accessible by public transportation. The surrounding area offers clear landmarks and several ways to explore the historic center.
Between 1873 and 1882, the building expanded northward between Herwarthstraße and Moltkestraße to accommodate the growing military administration needs.
