Vorstadtschleuse Brandenburg, Navigation lock in Brandenburg an der Havel, Germany.
Vorstadtschleuse Brandenburg is a lock on the Lower Havel Waterway with two separate chambers that allow vessels to move between different water levels. The southern chamber extends about 220 meters in length and measures around 17.5 meters in width.
The lock was built between 1881 and 1883 in the Krakauer district to manage the growing ship traffic of the industrial age. This structure responded to rising demands from commerce during industrialization.
The name refers to the surrounding Vorstadt district and shows how vessels navigate different water levels here. The facility remains part of everyday life for people who travel by water or watch from the banks.
The northern chamber operates on weekdays from 6:00 to 22:00, while Saturday hours run from 7:00 to 22:00. Visitors can watch from the banks as both cargo vessels and recreational boats use the lock.
Each chamber operates independently and serves different vessel types: one handles large cargo ships while the other manages smaller recreational boats. This allows different vessels to pass through simultaneously without blocking each other.
