Fasanerie Groß-Gerau, Public park in Groß-Gerau, Germany.
Fasanerie Groß-Gerau is a woodland park in Groß-Gerau, Hesse, made up of mixed forest with walking paths, playgrounds, and an animal enclosure. The enclosure holds a wide range of animals, making the park a place where nature and family recreation come together.
The park was founded in 1726 by the Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt as a pheasant hunting ground, with birds originally brought from the Caucasus. Over the following centuries, it gradually shifted from a private noble hunting estate to a public green space open to everyone.
The name of this park comes from the pheasants that have long lived here and given the place its character. Visitors can still watch these birds moving freely through the grounds, which makes the experience feel closer to nature than a typical city park.
The park is easy to walk around, with clear paths through the wooded areas and open meadows. Sturdy footwear is a good idea, especially after rain, when the forest trails can be slippery.
An old pyramid oak tree growing in the park was given protected natural landmark status in 2013, recognized for being over 100 years old. Its unusual shape sets it apart from the other trees in the woodland and makes it easy to spot along the walking trail.
