Kommende Lage, Monastery complex in Rieste, Germany
The Kommende Lage monastery stands next to the late Gothic St. Johannes der Täufer Church, which dates from the 15th century and contains a large crucifix.
The monastery originated in the 13th century when Count Otto von Tecklenburg donated his court in Lage to the Order of St. John.
The Franciscan Minorites from four nations, including India, Romania, and Zambia, maintain daily pilgrim masses and evening prayers at the monastery.
The monastery plans to offer accommodation facilities, conference rooms, and a festival hall for concerts and events after the completion of renovations.
Every Friday, members carry a 135-kilogram cross, known as crucifixus dolorosus, around the church as part of an 800-year-old pilgrimage tradition.
