Schloss Liebenstein, Heritage castle in Göppingen, Germany
Schloss Liebenstein is a castle in Göppingen featuring a rectangular stone structure with a steep pitched roof and ornamental three-part curved gables. Corner turret-style bay windows give the building its distinctive silhouette along Heimbacher Straße.
Philipp Albrecht von Liebenstein commissioned the castle in 1686 following a family conflict with his brother and the sale of ancestral lands. Construction incorporated materials and design elements from a nearby destroyed fortress.
The interior spaces reflect Renaissance design elements sourced from the destroyed Hohenstaufen Castle and incorporated into the building's structure. Visitors can observe three round stair towers, each historically serving different purposes for the castle's inhabitants.
The castle remains privately owned and retains its original structural features, including mineral springs in the cellars. Visitors should note that access may be limited and the exterior can be viewed from the adjacent street.
The Rebenstiege, a staircase decorated with elaborate vine patterns and animal carvings, was created by stone mason Hans Neu in the castle's early years. This crafted masterwork displays detailed stone carving that often goes unnoticed by visitors.
