Göppingen, Industrial city in Baden-Württemberg, Germany
Göppingen extends along the Fils valley at the base of the Swabian Alps and shows different building styles from several centuries. The city combines older districts with postwar residential blocks and industrial facilities by the river.
The settlement emerged around 1150 under the Staufer family, who built a castle and later an administrative seat here. In the 19th century the place developed into a center for metal industry and mechanical engineering.
The city sits in one of the traditional Swabian industrial areas and many residents still speak the local dialect in everyday life. At the market square people meet for shopping and in the surrounding streets smaller shops stand alongside modern stores.
The railway station sits near the center and offers direct connections to Stuttgart and toward Bavaria. Many parts of downtown can be reached on foot and there are several parking options at the city edge.
A production of tin toys began here in the second half of the 19th century and led to the founding of a company that later made model railways. This factory remained one of the largest employers in the region for decades.
