The Altes Schloss Rechberghausen, north of Rechberghausen on the Burgholz hill, survives as a gate tower and the St. Johannes Baptist chapel, the only parts that escaped the 1685 fire. Around them a larger farmstead was built in the 18th and 19th centuries. A 1844 description records a massive castle with small towers, six to eight buildings and a well.

The castle was probably built between 1100 and 1150 by the Lords of Rechberg-Bettringen, who owned the village; it is first documented in 1232 and 1245 as a Rechberg castle. After a fire before 1360, Duke Frederick of Teck had it rebuilt between 1361 and 1370. Shorndorf peasants devastated it in the German Peasants' War of 1525, and around 1575 Haug Erkinger von Rechberg converted it into a three-winged Renaissance palace. A fire in 1685, probably caused by lightning, destroyed it except for the chapel and gate tower; its stones went into the New Palace in 1721.

The name Rechberghausen comes from the Swabian noble family of Rechberg, whose seat was Hohenrechberg near Schwäbisch Gmünd; a branch, Rechberg-Rechberghausen, formed here. The chapel is dedicated to St. John the Baptist and was restored in 1999. The gate tower and chapel, together with the estate, still belong to the Counts of Degenfeld-Schonburg.

The remains stand on the Burgholz hill north of Rechberghausen, west of the Oberhausen hamlet, at about 320 to 400 m above sea level; the Marbach curves around the hill from the north. The gate tower and chapel of St. John the Baptist are the surviving parts, now within a larger farmstead still owned by the Counts of Degenfeld-Schonburg, so view them from the public paths.

The 1844 description records that the castle was massively built, its wall topped with small towers on several sides, and that the interior held six to eight buildings and a well. A pond east of the hill suggests the original castle was a water castle or had water-filled moats.
