Oberhofenkirche, Medieval church in Göppingen, Germany.

The Oberhofenkirche is a late Gothic hall church built from 1436 to 1490, with pale yellow walls, a dark brown tiled roof and tall pointed windows along its side. A square stone tower on the right carries a tall grey spire, with a second, slightly shorter grey spire behind and to the left. The projecting porch has a pointed-arch entrance with double doors, and inside, a ribbed vaulted ceiling rests on slender columns above dark wooden pews.

A first parish church of Göppingen is documented in 1275, on the site of a Roman villa rustica and an early medieval wooden church. Count Ulrich V of Württemberg had the present late Gothic hall church built from 1436 to 1490 and turned it into a house of canons. After the canons were dissolved at the start of 1535 it served mainly for funerals; from 1854 it was restored in Neo-Gothic style, and since 1902 it has again been a parish church.

The name Oberhofen refers to the church's position at the upper farmstead outside the medieval town walls. Since 1902 it has served as Göppingen's second Protestant parish church. Inside, a late-Gothic choir stall and Baroque epitaphs, some moved here around 1770 from the town church, are on view.

The church stands outside the old town walls next to the Heiligkreuzkapelle, the surviving choir of the 1410 Marienkapelle, which is used for exhibitions and devotions. The main entrance lies in the projecting porch with the pointed arch and double doors; the interior is entered at the level of the nave, with the raised polygonal choir at the far end. Since 1902 the building has served again as a parish church, so visits fit around services.

Archaeological digs in 1980/81 uncovered a Roman villa rustica from the 2nd/3rd century AD beneath the church, followed by an early medieval wooden church built in post construction. The excavations also yielded an early denture made of hippopotamus tooth, a find visitors rarely hear about.
