Speed Snake, Steel roller coaster in Fort Fun Abenteuerland, Wasserfall, Germany

Speed Snake is a Vekoma Whirlwind steel coaster in the rear section of Fort Fun Abenteuerland, beside the Marienkäferachterbahn. Its track is painted black while the supports remain green, and the train is shaped like a light-green snake with seven cars holding four riders each. The layout runs from a 90-degree left turn into the lift hill, then a roughly 60-degree slanted drop, two corkscrews and a gentle right curve before the brakes.

The ride opened in June 1981 as Wirbelwind, a Vekoma Whirlwind coaster, and ranks among the oldest attractions at Fort Fun Abenteuerland. It was renamed Speed Snake in 2010, when a new Vekoma train shaped like a snake replaced the old orange-and-white Arrow Dynamics train. A further train from Sunkid Heege followed in the 2017 season.

The snake theme is visible in the train itself: since 2010 a Vekoma train shaped like a snake has run on the track, and since 2017 a light-green Sunkid Heege train with the same snake form. The name SpeedSnake FREE, adopted in 2017, refers to the new lap bars that close only from below, giving riders a freer feeling.

A minimum height of 140 centimeters is required to ride alone. The coaster can handle around 1,350 visitors per hour, so expect moderate waiting times during normal park hours.

The 2017 train from Sunkid Heege replaced the Vekoma snake train and brought lap bars that close only from below, which is why the ride was renamed SpeedSnake FREE. The cars keep the snake shape, now in a light green tone.
