Burg Ohrsberg, building in Eberbach, Karlsruhe Government Region, Bade-Württemberg, Germany
Burg Ohrsberg is a castle ruin sitting on a hilltop in Eberbach, probably built in the late 12th or early 13th century. The remains show a double trench system around the hill, with wall foundations and reconstructed sections from the 20th century that give a sense of the original fortification's structure.
The first fortification at this site was probably built in the late 12th century and belonged to the counts of Lauffen, an influential family in the region. The castle was built up probably in the mid-13th century and was once an important residence, but later lost its significance and was eventually abandoned.
The name Ohrsberg likely derives from an old word for hill or height. Today, the ruins offer a window into medieval power and status, with the layout of fortifications and building foundations showing how rulers displayed their authority and controlled the surrounding lands.
The site is reached by walking paths and offers wide views of the surrounding landscape and valley from above. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes, as the ground is uneven and the paths can be steep.
The double trench system around the hill is rarely seen in the nearby area and suggests a carefully planned defensive design. Archaeologists continue to study this double structure to better understand whether it was a frontier fortress or simply an outpost for a nearby larger castle.
