NVA-Erholungsheim, Military recreation center in Frauenwald, Germany.
NVA-Erholungsheim Frauenwald is an eight-story concrete building standing at 764 meters elevation on the Großen Riesenhaupt peak. The distinctive sloped southern facade and stepped design accommodate 400 beds, an indoor swimming pool, basketball courts, and direct access to outdoor recreational areas.
Built in 1976 for the National People's Army, the facility provided accommodation until German reunification in 1990. The military function ceased after that period, marking the end of its original purpose.
The building served as a gathering place for military personnel from East Germany and Warsaw Pact nations during the Cold War. The wooden-paneled interiors, dining halls, and terraces reflect how people from different countries shared spaces together.
The building sits on a mountain with access to hiking trails and outdoor recreation in the surrounding area. Visitors should be aware that highland conditions can bring changing weather at this elevation.
Locals call the building 'Sprungschanzenhaus' because its sloped southern section resembles a ski jump in profile. This distinctive shape created by the descending facade gives the structure its most recognizable feature.
