Burg Ohsen, Water castle in Emmerthal, Germany
Burg Ohsen is a medieval water castle near Emmerthal, built on a rectangular island surrounded by defensive water systems. Stone walls and corner towers form the main structure, creating a barrier between the castle and the surrounding landscape.
The site was first recorded in 1004 and became an important stronghold for the Counts of Everstein in the 13th century. Ownership changed over time, but the castle maintained its role as a key military and residential center in the region.
The castle blends military defense with aristocratic living space, a balance visible in its surviving rooms and layout. Visitors can experience how medieval nobles balanced protection with comfort in their everyday surroundings.
The castle is located roughly one hour from Hannover and is easily accessible by car. Parking is available on site, and guided tours take visitors through the preserved rooms and structures of the fortress.
A historical copper engraving by Merian documents the castle with its original complete moat system, much of which is no longer visible today. This artwork helps visitors understand the full extent of the water defenses that once surrounded the fortress.
