Montageeber, Observation tower and crane in Eberswalde, Germany.
Montageeber is a steel lattice crane standing about 190 feet (58 m) tall in Eberswalde, Germany, built from welded steel profiles. It sits on the former grounds of the Kranbau Eberswalde factory and is now protected as an industrial monument.
The structure was built in 1954 as the first model in a series of cranes designed to assemble and disassemble port cranes. It remained in active use at Kranbau Eberswalde until 1990, when it was placed under monument protection.
This structure shows how local craftspeople and engineers developed and used advanced crane technology in Eberswalde. You can see the technical solutions that workers employed during assembly and operation.
A lift carries visitors up to an observation platform at about 100 feet (30 m), where views of the surrounding area open up on clear days, with the Berlin TV Tower visible in the distance. Clear weather makes the visit more rewarding.
The crane uses a rocker mechanism with moving counterweights that allowed heavy loads to be moved while consuming far less power than comparable machines. This made it more efficient to run on a daily basis than other cranes of its time.
