Domäne Calenberg, Heritage monument in Schulenburg, Germany

Domäne Calenberg is a former state estate at Hauptstraße 1 in Schulenburg, consisting of Baroque half-timbered farm buildings and a red brick main house added in Prussian times. The main house sits behind a white wall with a round-arched stone gateway and tall, narrow windows; a black metal fence runs along the street.

The first farm buildings were erected around 1660 as the economic yard for Calenberg Castle, a few hundred metres away, from which the Welf principality of Calenberg took its name. After Prussia annexed the Kingdom of Hanover in 1866, the domain passed into Prussian state ownership, and the red-brick main house was added as the domain administrator's residence. Following a settlement on the expropriation of princes after 1920, the estate returned to the Welf family, who renamed it Hausgut Calenberg. From 1866 to 1956 the von Bandel family managed it under a hereditary lease.

The name Calenberg comes from the nearby Burg Calenberg, seat of the Welf principality of the same name. From 1866 to 1956 the farm was held in Erbpacht by the von Bandel family; Julius von Bandel (1847–1899) was the first tenant, followed by his son Hans. Julius and Hans are buried with relatives in the new cemetery at Jeinsen.

The estate stands at Hauptstraße 1 in Schulenburg, directly on the Leine-Heide-Radweg, the Regionsring and the Welfenweg between the Pattensen town hall and Schloss Marienburg. The farmyard covers about four hectares, so allow time to walk between the buildings. The gate on the left of the white main house is the clearest landmark from the street.

From 1866 to 1956 the estate was run under a hereditary lease by the von Bandel family; the first tenant was the Prussian Amtsrat Julius von Bandel (1847–1899), followed by his son Hans (1882–1963). Hans's only son Henning, a cavalry captain, fell in the Second World War in 1944. Julius and Hans von Bandel lie buried with relatives in the new cemetery at Jeinsen.
